Who…

we are…

a brand and advertising agency of talented, inspired individuals who yearn to push boundaries, challenge conventional thinking and go beyond how things ‘should’ be.

We are an agency with a heart, humour and a solid reputation to match. Headed by one of Australia’s most acclaimed cinematographer/ videographer James Lopes and Melissa J Scott (highly talented designer, producer, and creator of Connection Marketing), Heretic Creative Agency is a leading boutique agency with true passion for what we do.

We thrive on innovation and clear communication, and our management structure is very flat. You get to speak to the creatives who are managing and executing the creative work. We are known in our industry as leaders and change-makers. We are here to serve our clients, and while our personal vision is to create a long-lasting and memorable legacy for your brand, we never lose sight of what your main objectives are.

Our focus is always on winning the hearts of our client’s audience, and celebrated for the impact we make, not for the awards we may collect along the way.

“Like a random song that becomes an anthem, a clever marketing vision and advertising campaign can live on for decades after its inception, and we strive to create that for our clients.”
James and Melissa

Meet the team…

Our team has been handpicked and cultivated over the years (and in some cases decades) to create the right energy and expertise to work on our client’s brands.

Melissa J Scott
Founder / Creative Director / Designer

Melissa is one of those curious beings (kind of like Michael Jackson), except instead of being born to dance, she was born to design (she would argue that she was also born to dance!). From her heady days at age 10, taking out the Grand Art Prize at the Ariah Park Ag Show, through to now, she has always been a tenacious, creative, occasionally dancing, computer-keyboard-abusing whirlwind (no, seriously… check out her computer keyboard). Melissa spent some time on the road as a lead singer in a rock band in her early days, then spent a lot more time raising state athletes and soccer stars whilst simultaneously camping in Bourke with the Prime Minister and the Head of Google Australia. Melissa considers “irony” her chief weapon of humour. It may be ironic that it isn’t…

James Lopes
Founder / Creative Director / Videographer

When James was a child he performed in many eisteddfods… and then his voice broke. In his 20s, he worked in Heavy Industry Management, in his 30’s he toured Australia, Europe, Canada and the USA with his band The Cherrypickers, supporting acts like INXS and Deep Purple. In his 40’s he put down his guitar and picked up a video camera full time. If he isn’t being creative, he’s… well… let’s just hope he continues being creative! He describes himself as an ‘Artsy creative on the back end of a video camera. All I need is the tartan beret.’ Many people have asked James just how he sleeps at night with that brain of his. Thankfully, it powers down of its own accord most nights around midnight.

Tim Grose
Videographer /
Video Editor

Tim was born in Broken Hill, and to this day he remains conspicuously quiet about who actually broke it. The ensuing 30 years saw a move to the east coast, and touring the world with his band LORD, producing everything from synth-pop, to heavy metal, to orchestrated movie soundtracks from his recording studio. Just as proficient with a camera and a video editing suite as he is with a guitar, it’s a long-running joke that Tim “connects to the Matrix” to instantly learn how to use new software or techniques. It would almost be funny if it wasn’t true.

Alicia Lansdown
Photographer

Alicia is a “tog” (which is a really shit abbreviation for “Photographer”). She’s a bit of a gun round these parts, and you’ll regularly see her down at Bondi or her beloved Paddington, shooting someone, or something (nicely). When she puts down her camera she picks up inordinately huge weights, so that petite frame packs “guns” of a different variety.

Gervais Koffi
Videographer /
Video Editor

Gervais is an international music star, originally from the Ivory Coast (HE claims it’s called the Cote d’Ivoire, and at 6’6″ who the hell is going to argue with him). When he isn’t shooting video, he’s picking up a multitude of instruments and playing African roots, or reggae. Despite this, we still like him.

Andy Kirkwood
Drone Operator / Videographer

Andy has been in the aerial videography game since early days. But what he does with drones should never be attempted or even watched by most people. Think a delicate aerial ballet combined with karate. He has a marketing and action sports background and understands what kind of content makes people tick. What ensues is a spectacular series of shots and the craft returns in one piece. He treats his snowboard similarly.. snow is optional
